Wingnut is the answer

Woke b4 dawn and tossed and turned, finally up just after 6. Put the move action on and got after life. Grocery shop then laundromat. Clean clothes w/ the line dry items hanging on the clothes line strung across the back of the van. Nice to see riding apparel clothes pinned up. Most of the pins are from my former house and in use continuously since 1992.

Made MBH where I loaded the stuff from the Osprey into the Wingnut then wear it to learn of collar bone pain. Packed passed. Weight is borne low held by a  hip belt. Not real contact w/ the healing fracture. I now have 4 packs inside my van.

Forecast was for rain by 11:00 and high winds. I approached my day per the forecast resigning myself to no ride. Rain held off ( as of 7:55PM no rain has fallen) filling my head w/ riding. I drove back down to BnB to ride the familiar and more gentle trails. Rode Bell pathway to Llama to Little horse to HT to biker made trails Made in the shade and lower shades back to shop. Pack worked well. Should not have eaten the stickie bun @ bagel shop while I read the paper. Hard getting the sugar out of my belly. Spent much o0f ride gasping for breath and a high HR. Doing well  getting back into riding. I will start lengthening the rides.

Shower @ the spa, buy a small piece of salmon @ NEW frontiers for dinner. Drive back to Deer pass. Same van is parked in my favorite spot. I checked it out and my belief it is a place holder for a future camper.

Forecast put off the snow for tonight. Supposed to rain then showers.

Today the wind was blowing drifting sand over the trails in spots. Rain will wet the sand grains, hold them together, and the tires will pack then down. Great riding several days after rain until the sun dries them out. Humidity is low for the norm.

Rear suspension really works better w/o propedal. Next step is to swap out the Fox for the rock shox PUSH tuned Monarch.

Another day of dirt then good news

Yesterday AM I left favorite spot @ Deer pass rd for a ride out of BnB. Have a chiro appointment late afternoon.

Made BnB for my ride, a repeat of yesterday. Today i am a bit more comfortable, however i walked some of the same stuff. i did make several that I walked yesterday. Rode out Llama to Little horse out to Bell pathway again then the bail trail back to Llama. OK, my new Osprey shoulder strap rests right on the break and does cause pain. I am working on my pedal stroke, transferring muscle memory from spinning on my road bike and the breathing exercises Doc taught me. Key is to let my breathing control my speed. Gear down and keep same leg spin on uphills.

Overcast and chilly day.

Caught shower @ spa. Then chiro. Doc said that my body has kept adjustments from last week. She worked some more magic helping make my right side stay on its side of my spine.  Talked about hydration pack on my shoulder. Bone healing can use stress and rest. Key is that bone is healed enough to withstand the pack strap and hanging weight. Let pain be the guide.

Today is my ortho DR appointment for medical evaluation. Plan is to drive up to Flag in the AM for 1:00PM appointment. Stopped @ Starbucks inside safeway in west sedona for a tall cup of coffee and the newspaper. I have JAVAcid, an effective antacid neutralizing coffee acid. Brewed coffee is an acquired taste. I prefer the cold brewed coffee method. JAVAcid does prevent heartburn.

Found Absolute Bike shop on old rt 66 in Flag. They are a  Specialized dealer and I am experiencing shoe material failure again. These shoes were bought back late Sept w/ 8 weeks off. Better to report issue while shoes are less than 1 year. This time I am ordering a size larger so they won’t track my returns. Not really, Specialized made the former size smaller.

Back during my ’09 visit I found a brew pub and Scotch bar down the street from Absolute. I am searching for laiphroag quarter cask Scotch and I figured that the bar might know where to buy it. They special order it. The manager had an inventory bottle that he sold me retail for $64.  Very strong peaty nose and taste that lingers in the mouth and memory.

Ortho DR Bonatus reviewed the newly taken Xray and pronounced me well on the road for satisfactory healing. The bone ends are doing  what they are supposed to do. The Xray still shows less density @ the fracture site. Pain is caused by the healing bone ends. Pain will go away when bones are completely knitted. I can ride and stress my body. Falling @ anytime is not suggested. Learned issue about Coumadin bleeding is hitting my head and possibly causing my brain to bleed which isn’t good for my better well being.

Weather @ Flag was going downhill as the temp dropped, wind picked up, and snow started falling on the mtns above town. Humphrey’s Peak @ 12,600 is the state’s highest peak and it is just outside town. Windy drive down Oak creek canyon. Stopped to check out Cave Springs XG where the Spokane folks will stay during their visit.

Stopped @ MBH to ask about Wingnut hydration packs that Rama uses. He wasn’t there but the shop has the pack. Checked it out and asked my usual barrage of questions to Nod. He uses the same pack and he said it works. Principle is that the weight is carried low around the small of the back. Seems like it will mitigate pressure on my break. Tomorrow I will load it up and learn how it carries. I have seen the pack back in SE and here.

Back out @ Deer pass rd, favorite spot taken. Snow is still forecast for Sat night followed by 60 deg temps.

8 weeks and 3 days…. first dirt ride

Last night I got my favorite sleep spot @ Deer pass rd where the Bike mag photo was taken. Balloons not close enough to hear the propane burners.

Packed up & headed down to BnB. Today I am going on my first dirt ride after my fall. Riding fro BnB on Bell Rock pathway then to Llama and back. I wore my new osprey hydration pack. Scot @ BnB straightened me out on the propedal setting on my shock. The Spot does not need propedal which dampens the pedal bob and makes the suspension less subtle. Today I enjoyed a subtle rear end. I rode conservatively where I walked several ups and downs that I previously rode. I needed to lessen the upper body action. Felt good. My shoulder still hurts all the time but I believe I felt no additional pain from the ride.

Hung out @ BnB afterwards. Finally took a pic of the shop:

Bike and Bean

Shower @ spa, grocery shop, & head out to Deer Pass site. Scored my spot again.

Tomorrow is chiro appointment and Thurs is ortho DR.

Monday I finally set down to figure my taxes using an on line version of Turbo Tax. Completed, I owe a manageable amount from investment performances.

Spent Mon PM @ Fat Tire shop replacing my old grip shifts w/ Fixie Dave’s slightly used ones and the cables & housings to them. Dave busied himself attending to small things I never paid attention to.

Fri night forecast is for snow level below Sedona’s elevation.
