no caps, 1 finger anguish

today i set out by myself to ride highline, down baldwin then cross the creek to trails over there. i walked the upper baldwin till i could ride the remaining switchbacks. i made them. the trail dropped into a narrow rocky wash.  i had ridden this in the past. this time i stalled on a small roller. my handlebar twisted to the right which pitched me downhill over the bars. it is a narrow wash. i found the far side right full force on my right shoulder and right side on helmet. i spattered on upslope.  inventory of extent of sudden stop. pain in right shoulder. i wiggled around a little to sit up. i wiggled .lightly my shoulder. pain. movement distortion. big time damage. as i fell i kept my arm against my body to prevent possible broken wrist, torn ligaments were the extent of my fear.  i need to get to the hospital for treatment. but first i need to stand up and pick up my bike. right arm can’t stand lifting the bike. i get it upright and straddle the top tube. i push off and of a fashion i am ridding. plan is to catch baldwin trail for several miles to verde valley school road then ride back to my van @ bnb so i could drive myself to the hospital.

40 minutes of dirt and pavement riding after the fall i made bnb. i could not lift my bike onto the bike rack.  i asked bnb to check out the bent rear brake lever and told them what happened and what i was planning. took bike gear off and put on topsiders. left hand turn right side key start. made hospital . appears to be just staff rigs in the lot. good no waiting line. walked in. xray tech walked by and remarked she remembered me from last year’s fall. 3 xrays and read by er doc diagnosed broken collar bone almost @ the joint. i was fitted w/ a cross brace sim to my experience 36 years ago after i broke my left collar bone from a dirt bike crash.  pain meds.

riding by myself enjoying making all the decisions. i made a brain fart and payed for it.

i have more hours each day to fill. typing is painfully slow.

just another experience on my odyssey. my goal is to be self sufficient. i need to buy another car sleeping bag to sleep on the floor as lowering and raising takes a full 2 hands, way too heavy to do one handed.

pain meds wacked out to shallow left field

Desert got cold

Sunday was a shirt sleeve ride day. Mid afternoon Rama commented that the wind turned cold.

Monday early afternoon ride started cold w/ long sleeve wool underwear and turned colder and windier. We rode Highline out to new trail, Transcept, out & back. Highline is deeply shaded but somewhat protected from the wind. Transcept catches big gulps of western sun exposure but was blasted by winds. Several times I walked my bike over an exposed tech move for fear of being airborne down slope. Winds continued and the temp kept dropping.

transcept trail traverses on right, Verde Valley in distance

Mon night I drove out to Beaverhead and discovered a tent camper set up camp in my regular spot. I parked on a flat spot just off the pavement facing south. My roof vent hinges from the forward edge which exposed the free edge of the skylight cover to be battered by the wind directing cold air inside. I left it opened just the proverbial crack. Cold night, @ 7:44 AM yesterday it was 14 deg outside and a balmy 43 inside. I saw my breath from my bed. Too cold.

Yesterday remained in lower 20s w/ strong winds, way too cold to ride.

Jim and Jan hosted Zack and Sarah and me for a shared dinner. I made my Waldorf salad. I drank a martini that Jan made. Shaken not stirred.

At Beaverhead last night it was 18 degrees and windy. I scored my spot locating the vent opening into the wind. I keep the passenger window cracked. It was on the windward side and the wind blew in. I closed it and opened the drivers side on the leeward side. Still cold. I slipped the thermal blanket under the down blanket and wore wool long underwear top and bottom, wool socks, and Whapati wool hat. I slept till almost 8:30 because I was warm. It was 47 inside when I got up. Today the temp made 35 degrees @ Beaverhead b4 I headed into town. Still too cold for a ride.

Yesterday a physical therapist examined me to determine a solution to my tight left glute.  She gave me several stretches. Pain still there. 2 weeks ago I removed the 9mm lift in my left shoe.

Did wash @ only laundromat in Sedona. Late afternoon is another chiro appointment. Took shower @ Hilton spa, clean body on clean sheets for the best sleep. Looking forward to my new flannel sheets.

Monday I emailed Scott Taylor, the promoter of the Cascade Cream Puff 100 mile race in Oakridge. I helped @ the race back in ’09. This year I plan on being there again to help. That night Scott called me. He visited here before and rode w/ Dean. He might be visiting here during spring break. Cool.

Today the humidity was 8%. Several days ago my right nostril spontaneously bled.

Skies are cloudless, same color of blue. All day long. No moisture, no clouds.
