Fruita

Friday morning early wake up in anticipation of having a working fridge installed in my van. The fridge is at the shop and I talked service into my appointment 1 hour after they opened to allow for my travel time. I left Steve’s in the dark and doing an Irish good bye of not even waiting for him to see me off. Driving at night was different as I usually get to where I want to be before dark. OH, sun is shining shorter hours. Arrived at dealer just after they opened. Greeted service manager and complimented the parts guy on his scoring the fridge. Service drove my van inside, I emptied the contents of fridge and they shooed me to the waiting room. I didn’t pay attention to the time for how long I waited, I had not really settled into crushing the chair’s cushion before I was summoned to pay up. New fridge refrigerated very quickly. Thanked them all and paid up.

Service was so fast I was not prepared for my travel plan. Weather forecasts for between here and Fruita were not favorable to either riding or driving. I bailed on Pocatello and Vernal and the lesser traveled 2 lanes. My plan became very simple: get on the interstates and head SE. Interstate driving at less than posted speed limit. Windy requiring constant micro tab adjustments kept me in the slow lane. Sheesh: I-l5 down Utah front range with whole megalopolis of Salt lake City. Four lanes wide and they are still adding on. Seemed like it. Just lots of traffic. Too many people crammed into same space. My right cheek was barking from pressing the go fast pedal and my left shoulder hurt from doing more work than the right. Left interstate on RT 6 over Soldier Summit, down to Price, and up and away. In previous trips I have spent the night at a side road back off the highway, I just needed for memory recall to locate it. Opps, I passed it, I u-turned then turned on the road. Drove back to a level site. Desert is just parched, cattle grazing earlier in season, now what is there is stiff and brown.  I was about 2 hours from Hawkeye trailhead outside of Fruita.

Sat I budgeted my time to arrive for my ride on Hawkeye when the sun had warmed things up. Refueled in Green River, UT, 25.6 mpg on interstate. Hawkeye TH is at the Mack exit way on the western edge of CO. Upon arrival there were just a few open parking slots in the small lot. Didn’t expect the trail to be crowded based on quantity of rigs. I changed into riding clothes, inside my van I was chilly and I assumed outside would be the same. I watched several riders ride by wearing summer coverage. I wore my lightweight wool jersey but decided I did not need more. I stepped outside, it was like hot. My jersey was more than sufficient.

Hawkeye is maybe 3 years old and was built by a pro trail building company. Very well laid out and built. I have ridden this trail and loop since then. Trail gets after it right from the parking lot. Whoa: there are embedded rocks in the trail. WTF? Oh, that’s the way they do it here. Mentally I was calibrating reflexes and muscle responses to this difference from the 25 rides on Idaho trails. My engine looses people power every year. I lack the punch power to make some of the roll ups, the same for others as I saw mostly clipless shoe tracks. Made it to the top and stopped at the junction of Mack Ridge downhill. 2 riders were resting, one on a hard tail. He saw my bike and said that that was his bike only had sold the one he had because he needed the $ and bought the hard tail. We all down climbed the start like I always do, it is beyond even the yellow color rating. Below that the trail has so many features better letting gravity pulling me over than fighting an uphill. I watched the hard tail guy bounce along which helped me go faster as if he could do it my more capable squish bike could handle it. After following Steve on his 29er I have been taking more aggressive lines which abuse my bike more but is doable and faster. The 2 guys were going to ride my same route. I could not keep up with them once we turned on Lions to climb. However, I did pass them as they had stopped for pics or catchup. Quite a few tight rock choked sections required walking. Once past the trail dumped onto an eroded jeep track. I pedaled all the climbs except for the steep rock problems. I even pedaled nonstop the road climb up to top on Mack ridge. Impressive for me.

top of Mack Ridge, overlooking Colorado River

Then over to upper end of Hawkeye for the descent to TH. I rolled the stepups going down. Finished. I put effort into the ride just continually pushing myself riding almost non stop for 1 hr 46 mins climbing 1335′ in 11.9 miles. Last May and October I rode this same loop for almost the same time and heart rate. Today was 4 mins faster. I don’t set out to go faster than previous times, I seem to ride with same verve. For me it is satisfying that my times are not getting slower as I am staying even with aging.

75 degrees at van. No trees or water. Welcome to next maybe 5 months of desert riding.

Back at the van I soft pedaled cool down and noticed grinding on the bike somewhere, I thought I narrowed it down to fork internals issue. Bike requires healing hands. Drove into Fruita downtown to Over the Edge, the original shop. Masks required but no max group size. I stated my case, bring the bike in. Introduced to for me a new wrench who drew my repair. He rode it while checking it out. He said it’s more likely gritty pivots. I left it in the shop’s care. The bike will now be inside and out of the forecasted rain and snow over the next 2 days. The side street going north was closed off to vehicular traffic converted to outside dining and drinking for Hot Tomato and brew pub across the street. Counter service at the Tomato. Bought beans from their coffee roaster.

Bought groceries for 2 days and filled sink water tank then drove out to Loma  exit and drove north past Highline SP to a spot another road lifer shared with me. BLM land. Spent many visits here as it is the closest to town primitive camping. Access is all weather gravel road, my spot is on a spur about 30 feet from firm dirt. Forecast calls for possible rain, dropping to teens temp and 1 to 3″ of snow overnight into tomorrow. I plan on staying here all day today and possibly tomorrow to wait out the forecast. Reality is now rain and dropping temps. At wake up it was 52, it is now 37 degrees at 2:30. Furnace is running. Clouds are blocking solar gain. First rain in many months.

Bought Grisham’s new novel: A Time for Mercy, 464 pages of small print. I am occupied while waiting out the weather.

Shop called, the wrench cleaned pivots which eliminated the grinding. Nothing serious. Bike is out of the weather.

Forecast calls for increasing temps during the week, back up in 60s at weekend. However, there are  nights below freezing, tonight is 15 and Monday drops to 9 degrees. Dunno if conditions will create freeze thaw mud.

Close to snug as a bug in a rug.

Back to reading.

It’s now snowing hard blowing from the north, 33 degrees at 3 PM. No solar gain.

I parked the van with the nose pointing south, the 33 mph gusts came from the north, my furnace is mounted underneath my van behind the rear axle. An intake and exhaust hoses extend downward. The wind was so strong it blew snow into the intake hose sniffing the furnace out. Threw 4 flashing lights indicating suffocation

Just way too nasty to go outside and crawl underneath to clear the hose. I turned to my original source of warmth: the catalytic infrared heater which pleased me by igniting right away. I have heat albeit with production of water vapor and consumption of oxygen. I am exposed to the wind so when I crack a door window for ventilation that 22 degree air is blasted inside. Just a little crack. This heater uses no battery power which is good. Snow is on the ground but not deep enough to drive out. Tomorrow I plan on driving into town seeking a truck garage that will allow me inside for a few minutes for me to clear the hose. Windows and doors are partially frozen shut. I lifted the wiper blades from the windshield to keep them from freezing to windshield. Just nasty outside now past sundown. I did switch to my winter weight wool sweater and I ain’t toasty inside.

Laid around and played around this old town too long

Summer’s almost gone, yes winter is coming on. But I am not running away from anything other than weather change which here in Wood River Valley calls for dropping temps and possible snow. I checked various weather forecasts to plan a driving route, darn, cold, really cold, and possible precip along the way to Fruita. Looks like non stop break away driving interstates to stay out of snow. Weather, it’s so much more than enjoyable.

My ballot arrived yesterday here, I opened it, marked my choices, signed it, then dropped off in the inside PO mail slot. Whew, I just wanted to vote.

Did my wash today here in Hailey. Hailey requires wearing masks and businesses that are open are to post signs requiring masks, the laundromat took the signs down over a week ago and have not been put back up. Attendants do not wear a mask. Just don’t know.

I washed my Wingnut pack finally in anticipation of it being dry before next ride. It’s drying inside my van but might be still wet for mid afternoon ride with Steve. I will be wearing wet gear like Steve wore wet shoes after out Warm Springs ride on Sunday but he forgot to dry his shoes.

I weigh 140 pounds with clothes on, I didn’t weigh this little back in the 90s when I was racing. No body fat. Pants are too big.

Tomorrow I drive out of the valley to Jerome RV dealer to buy and they install new fridge. I ordered the fridge on Mon, Tues the parts guy called me saying fridge is in store. It’s just money.

Life keeps going.

I prepare all my eats in my van. My gut issue healing process requires a SIBO diet which is very restrictive in choices. Dinner meals are adlibbed form a few items, I am eating for calories first and variety way down the preferences. Meals are like one burner gourmet backpacking fixings.

very filling

Steve texted me an invite to ride Hidden Valley from Bullion gulch. I’m in. 40 degrees and windy but hey, what’s a little chill? If you go I will. Our vans were parked at the TH with doors closed keeping heat in. I would need warmer clothing that was buried beneath warner temp clothes. I started with a mid weight wool jersey under my wind shell. I stepped out side, naw, need another layer, added mid weight capileene underneath. Wore leg tights and a cold temp hat. We opened our side doors looking at each other. Never was our to be effort called off. Swung my leg over the top tube, found the pedals, and put muscle effort to generate body heat climbing up the dirt road. My nose was cold. Big open fully exposed to no shelter wind. Sunshine provided mostly light or at best did not lower the temp. Steve likes to ride this as an out and back as the return is more varied and fun than completing the loop as it has a monstrous straight line climb out after a bunch of flow trail type features.

Hidden Valley
no snow fell., long straight climb out seen above the nearest tree.

Our way had many ups and downs and trail type turns. I put serious effort on the way out.

I thought that this ride here would be a good finale of riding here. 7.74 miles climbing 866′ pedaling for 1 hour. We were warm by final coast back to vans. I left the heat on in mine for toasty wardrobe change.

Back down in Steve’s driveway. It was 23 degrees this morning. 19 forecast for tonight. Filled propane tank yesterday as always to stay ahead of flame out. wearing long pants and socks and flannel shirt topped with wool shirt. Not yet ready for heavier wool sweater. Patagonia puffy has a windshell which blocks wind chill needed.

Tomorrow I will be leaving tall trees and water for deserts. Warmer temps as I work my way south.

Another 1000th

Back on March 19, 2016 I rode my first ride on my new Turner RFX. Yesterday’s ride marked the 1000th ride on that bike, all of 13.395 miles. The frame set has held up better than my body. I built the bike with some new parts and parts taken from the retiring 5Spot. Today all that remains of the original build are the I 9 wheel set and the Praxxis cranks. The I 9 hubs are from my original purchase back in 2014, bomber hubs.

Turner RFX

I 9 created the Hydra hub which is improved over the original Hydra hub. I am stepping up to the window to buy a new rear wheel set because I want one.

Still here in the Wood River valley enjoying the tail end of fall colors, of which the aspens have mostly lost their yellow leaves. Some cottonwoods are still holding on as their abscission takes longer.

Sunday after our Warm Springs ride I camped out on Trail Creek outside Ketchum. Pet peeve are people who drop off a camping trailer in a spot and use it as a weekend / vacation get away but leave it vacant for other days. By empty use occupying that spot it denies others such as me for 1 night stays. No enforcement of overstaying posted max days. I did find an open spot which has full on view of ski hill and has internet.

Monday was the 999th ride on the RFX and I was getting antsy to log the milestone. I drove up to Adams Gulch to ride Eve’s Gulch which is an up and back down ride. Big grunt. Steve and I rode this several years ago when I was here in the spring. Several avalanches that winter crashed down slope across the creek from the trail. We saw the debris while snow was still in the debris. Today just pick up sticks interlocked fire killed trees remain.

bottom of avalanche track

Location was burned back in 2013 that fire killed trees that have become bare snags yet not all trees were burned.

burned or green

Three snags had fallen across the trail requiring lifting, crawling underneath, or going around. A final punchy climb separated me from the high point. In previous years I watched Steve pedal up it while I had collapsed with an exhausted breather. Today he was not with me to witness my herculean (my ability) effort to pedal it. I rested a short while then let gravity pull me back to the trailhead. Short ride 11.5 miles taking 1 hr 43 mins. 5.6 miles uphill took 1 hr 12 mins, the descent took 31 mins to drop 1591′, that’s almost 300′ / mile climb.

Spent night out on Trail Creek again, same empty rigs still there.

Yesterday was to be the milestone ride. many choices, just depended upon how badly i wanted to beat myself. I chose Greenhorn Gulch to ride a Cow creek loop. Mid week and day put fewer rigs at the TH. I geared up adding a lightweight wool top under my lightweight wool jersey as the temps were brisk and windy. By the time I reached the turn up Cow I was sweating.  I took off the underlayer and stuffed it in my pack. Day started with cloudless sky but as the ride progressed high clouds moved in perhaps portending weather change, maybe precip that forecast did not call for. No precip, just another drought day.

No sheep or droppings today. Climb up on to top for viewsheds.

Imperial descent out there.

My solo descent was not as much fun as when riding with Steve as he is either setting an example for more speed or me leading causing me to go faster. Old legacy hiking trails. 8.15 miles climbing 1234′ taking 1 hr 9 mins. Completed the 1000th ride successfully. This was the 3rd time to ride this loop this fall, the first by myself. Today’s ride was 3 mins faster than previous rides but required several more minutes of extra effort.

Drove back down to Hailey for night out in Bullion gulch.

Take away from riding here is that the trail either goes up or back down, there is very little spinning trails short of valley bike trail.

My fridge has failed and needs to be replaced. Monday I googled new fridge and RV shops. RV shops quoted the same purchase price of $1,200, install was another issue. I picked a shop in Grand Junction to go to but the earliest install was end of Nov. I checked a shop in Jerome where I stated my case. Parts could have the fridge on Wed, next was pleading with service for install. Service was able to squeeze me in this Friday. Yesterday the parts guy called telling me the fridge was in his possession. Fantastic. Once installed on Fri I can commence my travels.

But wait: My ballot won’t arrive till Friday. I paid for 2 day ship which slid an extra 2 days. I will return back to Hailey Friday afternoon to pick up my mail and vote. Forecast later this week calls for snow that I would have been able to avoid if the mail were on time.

Two days ago the wrist band of my roadid broke and needs to be replaced. It will be delivered by mail also but where do I send it to? I could wait here for those days or have it sent to a place I would arrive to down the road.

Oh, other 1000ths. First was 1000 days on the road completed while in Sedona where Bike and Bean threw me a party. Several years later, again in Sedona, I completed my 1000th ride to small fan fare of my supplied corn liquor. My ride total is somewhere around 2,500 and I haven’t figured the days in 12 years and 2 months.

Guts are acting up more. Scored a DR appointment for this afternoon.
