Tried again

Recovery requires using it… gently kind of. Use it to the near edge of pain. Yesterday I pedaled. I rode out paved Verde Valley School rd, which became Sedona dirt road, down to its end at Baldwins crossing of Oak Creek. No jarring on the pavement, on the dirt small painless bumps. I was able to fully inflate my lungs overcoming rib pain. 11 miles pedaling for 1 hr 4 mins. average bpm was 125 which indicates, to me, my loss of conditioning.

However, sneezing is still painful what with reflex inflating my lungs, the ahaa, against the hurt ribs then the choo. I sneeze several times a day. Anticipation ain’t the ketchup oozing from the upturned bottle, it’s the upcoming pain, I know how I will hurt for several minutes. My body needs to sneeze for its health, to deny the sneeze is to keep something inside that the body is getting rid of.

Yes, I write about my pain. I hurt still 2 weeks post crash. My lifestyle of physical activity has been severely curtailed. I have been on a 2 week vacation. There is a choir of cracked or broken ribbers who know of what I express. Red line pain prevents me doing crunches and bridges. Range of motion in my shoulder appears to be the same suffering no damage.

So, I made today another vacation day.

Forecast called for 20% showers. I saw running sheep clouds during my drove to west Sedona meaning precip. Later the skies darkened as now yet hardly a dribble has fallen. Clouds said yes but here’s what I will give you.

Yesterday evening parked out at MP4 conditions of temp and wind were favorable to leave the side door open until around 8 PM. Only in the early hours did the furnace light.

I left the cultural park just after 2PM today heading N on main drag 89A. Traffic was flowing until 1st stoplight then backed up. Then finally stopped just short of Airport rd where the Worm is located. Traffic was plugged all the way down the hill. Way many minutes to be spent in backup. Pulled into the Worm lot  for people get to where they are going. Or, at least leave the road.

Still hurts

PT Eric said I just over did my healing body. He named Big Park loop as a gentle ride. I have yet to ride since that over zealous gusto grab.

Last 2 days I hiked, yesterday was a 2 hour hump going down Scorpion past my crash site then back up on Herkinham. Afterwards my right side  scapula area really barked. I still can not vigorously cough and a sneeze almost brings tears. I still hurt.

Friend Steve is down here visiting, he riding by himself then sharing his ride experience afterwards. Canadians Doug and Leia  continue to share time, Doug exploring social trails and Leia and their dog Swift and I hike. I have been making the commute from VOC up to  west Sedona to hang at the Cultural Park. OK internet speed and many riders to watch seeing their anticipatory smiles then smiles after ride completion. Sometimes a rider will stop by and recount a previous meeting or just say hello.  Several days ago a note was stuck on my driver’s window’s window, it was from Guy who was a Boeing engineer based at Spokane plant. It’s how to consume time from the time I get out of bed at around 6 AM to bedtime around 10 PM.

Today is selection Sunday for the NCAA  big dance. Zags projected as number 1 seed again.

Too Much Too Soon

I boogied during yesterday’s body test ride while receiving no too much of a good thing warning. I chose wisely to curtail my exuberance as my scapula started squawking during the return. Back at the van I had pain loading my bike back on van which continued now the norm. Sneezing or coughing hit the red zone on the pain dial. Back on Tylenol. One last scheduled PT session today.

Yesterday evening while parked at the cultural park cleaning up dinner fixings Jason, an old time Beaner, stopped by for short visit. Over time I have made more friends here in Sedona than anywhere else. So enjoyable for those to reconnect.

Last night I drove across 89A to the high school for the Banff film festival. I bought my ticket on line then picked it up at the venue. I hustled in and scored a prime seat. A woman sat beside me then said something about seats were reserved. I was not in hers. However, I looked at my ticket and saw my reserved ticket which wasn’t where I was. I scooted out then searched for my row and seat in the dark. I found the row where the seats were even numbered and I was odd. It was at row’s end. Nobody challenged me. Theater was not packed. At intermission with lights on I found my seat which again was at row’s end. Previous festivals seating was unassigned.

One film was about a boat building company up at Flag, they make dories for floating the Grand Canyon. Boat building in landlocked Flagstaff, what kind of boats? The film creator’s name and pic displayed, it was Dawn Kish who did the photo shoot for the Bikemag June 2010 article about me. The center fold pic has been displayed on the side of my van since shortly after publication of mag. I emailed her this AM complimenting her on her recognition, she replied remembering me.

This morn’s temp is in low 40s, even snow flurries fell. March weather has been short shirt sleeves then back to flannel.
