Snow

Yep, look at the calendar date: Feb 23, not far enough south to not see white. White color has covered the red dirt. Forecast called for it, winter weather advisory, Snow started this morn around 8. Ground temps are above freezing which will gradually return color back to red. Gift horse in the mouth of hero dirt forthcoming is temps below freezing at night creating freeze thaw and retarding trail drying out. Maybe riding on Sat.

Last week was shorts, this week back to layers.

Today I hung out at Absolute Bike here in VOC for a visit for both learning and sharing. Shop people are prolly, mostly, not in their 30s.  Nary a customer. Generation gap. My purpose was to share myself for whatever takeaway each person took. I added to their memories. Like a grandfather speaking with his grandchildren. Mountain bike shops are my social connection. We don’t know each other and won’t unless both of us form some sort of a connection. Step up or step out.

Snow a times fell faster than the warm pavement could melt it. I drove over snow. VOC is at 4,000′ Sedona is higher at 4,500. Up there is the Worm Bookstore where I source my books. Last night I finished my book, I need new material to get lost in which keeps me out of my own life, but possible slippery road and plethora of unskilled drivers kept me down here and dealing with my life. Ramblings.

Cloudy skies and slight amount of snow on the solar panel lessened the battery charging.

Data

Joe, the pedal up from Dry Creek crossing riding Outer Limits is 2.5 miles gaining 348′ pedaled for 25mins. The climb up Axis is 1.45 miles gaining 233′ took 14 mins. Piece missing is the extra on Outer Limits, Last Frontier, and Bolo which makes this route overall longer and prolly more vert climbed but climbing Axis is more enjoyable. Nod’s Knob is a grunt. I like your way as I can pedal all of Last Frontier.

Ah, the joys of familiarity.

Yesterday I rode from Sunset Park catching Old Post to Skywalker to high school. Social trails on Stay High then around Focus crossing 89A at phantom bike along creek to Outer Limits up and out then crossed over 89A to Over Easy connecting to Skywalker  to Old Post back, miles climbing 1243′ pedaling for 2 hrs 22 mins. Temp climbed enough to cause sweat to drip down onto my glasses. I did not share Outer Limits climb. Nice day. Forecast called for conditions not favorable to riding. Nature’s clue was mares’ tails:

More Cockscomb red rock and blue skies.

Cockscomb

Spring turns the fancy of male juniper parts to shoot their load into the air.

The chiro adjustment on my knee appears to be holding parts in proper alignment. Fear of knee damage is fading in the rear view mirror.

Reread Grisham’s “Time for Mercy”, its setting is N Mississippi. Fictional location but several landmarks were near where I rode.

Parked at outlet mall sideways to strong wind. Rocking van skews hitting the correct key. Snow is forecast albeit little accumulation. Sure am enjoying the red pow and was short sleeve shirts and 70s heat.

Zags are ranked # 1 again. Big dance weeks away. Excitement.

Replaced bike chain just before it hit the .5 stretch measurement. I am running an 11 speed cassette, not the in vogue 12 speed. I learned of 12 speed shortage. I have stayed in 11 speed from when I converted drive train to a 1by on former 5 Spot DW. Carried over to RFX and now on rail. Upgrade to 12 will require new: cassette, shifter, derailleur, and chain. With shortage of 12 speed chain I am to the good. I will buy a new chain for hording.

Sat I rode from the Cultural Park on the collective Western Gateway trails. Out there is a trail feature known as “Shithole” which as I understand it is a Poppa Bear, Mother Bear, and Baby Bear entrance then a wash ride. Bear size is based on hardest to easiest. I I watched an ebike rider climb up rock slab. Remarkable. power of assist. I connect cross country trails with system trails. So many ways to effect ride from length and tech challenge. So far I have been riding many trails keeping me amused enough not to resort to creating a lottery route. The lottery method inspired creativity to ride all of the pieces. System trails are named and marked, the cross country trails are just that, with no segment name. There are so many in Western Gateway area.

Ian stopped by and said he is up for riding. Means me along. Windy and chilly.

Out.

Adjustment

Recall I wrote I made my right knee pop during Sunday’s ride. I rode on Mon to learn of any issue with pedaling. I added 2 leg lift exercises that seemed to help. However, I lived a mostly sedentary life until this morning. Yesterday I was seen by my primary care DR up at Flag for PT referral for knee. Among that he checked my body out discovering system seems to be in working order. This morning I gave my body to a local chiro who adjusted the knee, its effect was felt instantly. Gotta go ride.

Which I did. Wed night a skiff of snow fell at VOC, more higher up canyon to Flag. Thurs was laundry day in W Sedona. Clean clothes  then drive up the canyon on 89A. I drove over several small patches of melting snow where the road was shaded. I will wash the van now. I returned down on the interstate in the dark. The pavement in the right lane is rough that rattled the van and me inside. Believe the headlights need to be re-aimed.

Today I rode pavement from outlet mall, now populated with art show viewers, up to Bell rock TH 1.1 miles away. I rode Llama to Bail trail. Today the dirt was red pow with no breakable crust. However, several small patches of overly saturated dirt were encountered. Not enough to warrant washing the bike. My knee sent its I ain’t really happy signals so I listened by shortening my ride choosing Bail Trail out to Bell Rock to  Courthouse TH taking a catch trail to connect with Slim Shady descent.

I seek validation that the reason my knee hurts, after the adjustment while riding, is because it needs to relearn motion now that parts are aligned correctly. I will test my premise tomorrow on a longer ride.

Recently a rider sent me an email including pics from their vehicle of my van backside while we were driving. I seem to favor the right side.

Rail has been ridden on 151 rides covering 2,182 miles. Replaced front and back tires, several chains, rear brake pads, same chain ring, cassette has many miles while on RFX.

I have 1 dresser drawer for my street clothes, inside there are 2 stacks of clothes, the stack on the right is of shirts and the other is lower body coverings. I segregate the stacks by season. Presently on top are long pants and sleeve shirts, underwear remains the same. Temps here were warm enough for short sleeve shirt that I reached down in the stack to retrieve. Laundry showed I wore 2 such shirts between laundry days. Still long pants. Temps have not been consistent enough to resequencing summer to above winter. Paux Phil forecast 6 more weeks of winter which justifies my present sort. I have been wearing my Bedrock sandals here all but a few chilly days.

Speaking of Bedrock, today on Llama a woman was hiking towards me as I waited for her to pass. I noticed she was wearing a [pair same color as mine. OK, her eyes were way up there. Encountered them later.
