June 6,1944

Reflection on significance of the date. My dad would be 91, he saw the tail end of the war. Very few vets alive today. Those were facts.

Last night I slept a bit up the hill at a place where Swami North crosses. Temp dropped enough to need only the single down blanket layer. I’m here again tonight.

Ride plan for today was to start about 9AM planning on finishing at lunch before the heat of the day of turned out to be 85 degrees. I rode right from my van dropping down Swami to the lower parking lot. Three ranch rigs attached to horse trailers populated the lot. Glad I chose to sleep elsewhere. I previous visits I stayed in the lot as the lower trail crosses the lot which allowed me to interact with other riders. Today I only shooed cows that blocked my way. I climbed up the canyon to the mesa on the trail which is down tight to a small stream and is actually a cow path. Lots and lots of cows.

looking up Dry Gulch

At 2 places I heard insect wings rubbing creating a ruckus. Black thumb sized black things flying all over. There were cicadas, not the same batch as the 17 year locust, maybe so, only time I have ever seen this kind of quantity was a 17 year hatching when I lived at home in Ohio.

deciduous tree loaded with cicadas as seen as black dots

Dry Gulch showed no mountain bike tire tread marks. The trail exited the canyon onto the same road that I am parked off of. Picked Rockstar continuing up on the mesa. I came upon this small fenced in enclosure. It is a control site for grazing analysis.

damage cows do. What unmolested nature looks like

On Upper Sugarloaf finally the trail was not desirable to cows, went over lots of exposed bedrock.

looking north, van is speck about dead center

Long hot ride fully exposed. desert sage. Up higher lupine were blooming sending their sweet smell to my inquiring nose. 85 degrees full sun. I had parked the van at a favorable orientation for shade in the afternoon. I hung the rest of the day in the shade. Water temp in the solar shower needed to be cooled before washing. Again, daylight till 9:22.

Park City wrap up:

On Saturday I stopped in Heber City for groceries planning on spending 2 days camped at Jordanelle. That was the only XG I researched. It was full. Plan B. I visited local bike shop for ride info and sleep spot. I picked Coyote Trail above the lake. Making built lessened the pain of climbing. A rider stopped because he recognized me. I recognized his voice, it was Jeff whom I know from OTE in Hurricane. A maybe 22 mile loop was possible by riding to top of mesa then dropping down to the trail that would go back to the start. I gave up before I topped out on the mesa. It became an up and down ride.

Coyote ridge

On the way back there were several short climbs. When I pedaled my bike made a nasty sound that was pedal induced. Bothersome, the noise was like finger nails on the blackboard. Back at the TH I loaded up quickly, not even a post ride recovery drink to drive  back to the bike shop before closure. I deduced that noise is from the rear hub. The shop was still open. Eric went over what could be causing the sound which agreed with my assessment. He said that the trail dust here is really fine that will work into tight spaces. He suggested to rinse off the chain and check it out. Wet chain eliminated the noise. Cool. Later that evening I applied new dose of Squirt.

Bike shop told about FS land way up the way for primitive camping if I accepted engine work going up and brake wear back down. The road was paved that just climbed past all this fenced private property. I drove thru a snow patch. Pavement ended right at the FS boundary at an empty corral and a family camped. Just around the bend snow pack blocked the road. camped at 9,000′.

8981′

After my dinner the family came over the mother packing a plate of their food. I have not eaten beef or pork since 1981. I asked if meat was included, yes she said. I apologized for my not taking their food.

Sunday the drive down was smooth and speed controlled as I used the brakes like I was riding my bike.

Sunday I drove over to Wasatch SP XG. Check in isn’t until 3. Learned that empty sites were available last night. I did call the park but the camp office never answered and I did not want to waste time to find the XG full.

Then at McCoy Corral after dark this huge gathering of like razors showed up. Lights and party lights drove by.

Today during my ride that sound reoccurred. Back at the van I called Chip at Sun Summit South to make a repair appointment to service the hub. He’s booked out 10 days. I met Chip back in 1990 on a trip thru Wood River Valley in my VW Westy Synchro. Back then I was riding an AMP B4 and he was a service shop.

Weather forecast is for temps in upper 80s and flood warnings from rapid snow melt out. Chip said that local trails are still under snow or newly formed lakes. Deep snow pack. I drive up there tomorrow to visit with Steve.

Idaho makes 5

States so far this year. Today I drove out past Kimberly, ID to Indian Springs BLM area. Drove up past the TH to a flat high spot. There is a lot of flat land north of here stopped by mountains to the north. Cows and beer drinking gun shooting damage. Sunset over a flat plane of horizon.

I rode 3 different places outside Heber City, UT and Park City. The last was this morning outside Park City in the Round Valley. MTBProject for navigation following a user’s defined loop. Machine purpose built trail.Banked corners, wiggles and waggles  and grade dips. Well designed as there are breaks between the climbs and likewise on the downs. Hard packed smooth. Desert environment. Everything was rideable including the steeps. Been there, rode that. Popular riding area.

Next was the 4 hour interstate highway drive, winds blew in Idaho. I will describe driving my van to an empty Kleenex box on 4 casters. I used up good chunks of my lane.

Sunday I drove down for snow line and the FS boundary to Wasatch SP and maybe a paid camp spot near town. Jordanelle was filled and nobody answered at Wasatch campground office. Crazy GPS navigation differed from the brown and white diresction signs. Made a big ride plan. Paid senior day use fee of $4.00 then drop   into the iron maiden. Just miles of trails aroiund Park City. I put my smart phone on the handlebar mount with MTBP guiding my route. I rode Phosphate counterclockwise as suggested. Trail traversed steep mountainside finding patches of leafed out maples. The dominant short oak trees have not leafed out.

gray color is unleafed out oak trees.

The climb was a hoot as a traverse would lead into climbing turns between short straight sections. Just when the effort suffered there would be a short traverse. The downhill was crazy tight turns right after another in places. Machine Built. I drove back to town, Heber City, for a shower at anytime. campground check in is at 3. Sunday night should have openings. Yes, plenty. Site with h2o and electric. Hot day that taxed the propane cooling. I stretched out my cord, I was about 6″ too far away. I finally decided that a cooler fridge was worth driving 2 feet. Slept there last night then left this early morning for the first ride above.

Sundown today was 9:22 there abouts. Darkness comes way late. I went for a walk tonight after dinner picking up a piece of trail: old school hand built when needed, otherwise I suspect it was just ridden in in most places. I put off writing this till almost dark. It is now 10:00PM and my eyelids are spending more time closing than full on open. More later

McCoy Flats Corral

Outside Vernal, UT. Great desert trail system, hand built, some trails were cow paths then named for something like “and Cookies”, “Got Milk”, then others like Slippery when wet and More hoes. Stopped at Altitude Cycle in Vernal for a brief visit. Familiar faces and recognition. Last weekend was a mountain bike festival which I missed. economic engine here abouts is petroleum which has tanked. Troy said 6 motels have closed.

So I drove out to the corral about noon. I parked in full sun because that is all there is. Right now, 9:22PM must be some ATV club is staging a group ride and are lust passing me. Burning bright LED lights. Perhaps there are 50 vehicles. Back to my ride. I set out about 1:00 because I can ride whenever I want, why wait for cooler temps later in the afternoon. in mid 80s full sun, sometimes a strong head wind. A piece of More Hoes runs the razorback with exposure on either side. Tread here appears to be rocks like aggregate: round and loose.

More Hoes on the skyline

I was heated.

About 4 rigs with bikes drove into the TH parking lot. Prolly 20 riders till dark. Great to see a bunch of users.

I have ridden here numerous times in the past. I’m parked right next to the remnants of the name sake corral. Too windy for a solar shower.

Snow capped peaks of the Wasatch are on the horizon. Tomorrow I will get close to them. Plan on staying at Jordanelle SP tomorrow.

Thursday I drove to the Mack exit off I70 to ride a new trail recently built named Hawkeye out at Kokopeli trails west of Fruita. This trail offers another way to pedal up to Mack Ridge. I wanted to ride down it. My route was Troy Built to Mack Ridge then down Hawkeye. Years ago I rode Troy Built in the opposite direction. Really chunky, lots of walking.

back down, watching 2 K9 troopers turn a woman’s car.

Then the Mack Ridge trail was almost more walking than pedaling as I climbed up to the ridge. ran into 2 guys Jesse and David.

New trail made the descent from the ridge a hoot with lots of distance.

Drove back to Fruita for a shower at health club and did my weekly wash.

I left Fruita heading North over Douglas Pass on the way to Vernal. I turned right off the highway at the top driving a bunch of miles till I found a flat spot off the road. I stayed here on a previous pass thru. Late afternoon thunderstorm moved in and left leaving just a few drops of rain and some lightning flashes. 44 degrees chilly enough to run the furnace on a low setting during the night. 8851′ elevation, snow melted out.

Strong gusts from the north are striking me broad side, lots of jiggling.

Speakers dropped right in the vacated hole. Such enjoyment hearing functioning speaker.

desert temps are in the 80s which is becoming harder to ride.
