From cold to fridgid

Fri AM @ 7:33 was 14 degrees outside behind the Elephants Perch store and 46 inside. Plan Fri was to drive to a gravel parking lot to fix Bfast then drive to Adams Gulch for a ride. Then soak in a hot spring on Warm Springs rd then drive to Hailey to watch a cyclocross time trial and spend the night down here.

The combination of water vapor, as a by product of heater, meets the inside of a cold windshield it forms frost. The colder the outside air the further up the frost line is on the windshield.

Hard to see the frost line

I ran the engine and defrost many minutes before diving over to a skiers’ parking lot. The area was making snow.

About 10: I was geared up for riding Adams Gulch. Van thermometer read 20 degrees. I dressed for very cold weather: neoprene overbooties, insulated gloves, heavier wool underwear top, cap, insulated leg warmers, and knickers. I rode up creek on hiker packed frozen snow. The traction was good but pedaling it extracted more energy. The hikers’ tracks turned uphill onto south face where the snow was all but melted off, except for on the back sides of the bench cut tread. The outslope was more exposed to the solar heat thus melted out and already becoming greasy from freeze thaw mud. Plus the sun was heating things up, now I am over dressed and not able to adjust my coverings. I just rode slowly. Trail heavily used by women hikers walking their dogs off leash.

Back at the heated van. I headed out for Warm Springs road. Road is right along the flowing creek. The pavement ends @ edge of town. From there it was gravel w/ stutter bumps in both the frozen gravel or compact snow and ice. These conditions just stress the cabinet joints so I minimize the miles I drive on these roads. 6.5 miles to spring. Slow driving over the bumps. Whoa! The road was being reconstructed, the bed was large Idaho spud sized rocks sort of packed. Speed was all ahead 1/16 steam. Turning around would have meant 8 point turn around where it was possible that the outside road edges could be soft sinking me. I drove maybe 300 yards until I found a slightly wider spot where a berm deflected water off the road. Maybe 8 points to carefully jockey myself around. No hot spring soak.

Took a shower @ Y. Bought propane.

Drove to Elephants Perch for the shop to evaluate bushing wear in my fork. My front hub was sending signals to call service. Jason dealt w/ the seals and retaining rings. I flushed the hub w/ WD 40. Jason put it back together and I on the bike. Jason wiggled the fork and declared that the bushings were worn. Now I know. Jason is calling in a warranty claim for new lowers that will be shipped to Fruita, my next long stop.

I drove down to cyclocross venue in Hailey. Course uses a failed prepared housing development. 4:00PM and chilly enhanced by wind chill. This is a combination bike and beer event w/ many local brewers pouring their wares. I watched Mark complete his time trial. Very cold. I dressed in my heavy wool sweater and thick pile jacket under my rain parka. Biting cold. And people were drinking chilled beer.

I ate a Hailey Burrito @ a Mexican restaurant then walked 3 blocks to Power House for a beer and bar conversation. Tasty porter but no chatting. I parked @ the race venue.

Sat AM it was 22 degrees. I have been hanging inside waiting for 1:00 start of main race.

The weather is so much better back @ Indian Springs than here. I will drive back down there Sun then drive back Mon for eye appointment. I will be able to ride in just chilly clothes.

Thursday i drove up to Ketchum in front of Elephants Perch store. Kyle and Roger work there. Jason was there. I did lots of visiting. I called Mark D and we created a visit to Sun River brewery tap room. Mark and his wife Inia have personal mugs. Mark’s is number 3. They invited me to dinner.

Gotta go watch the race.

From chilly to cold and snow

Yesterday I drove from Twin Falls out on the plains to up into the Woods River Valley stopping in Hailey. The rain I hid from in Twin fell as snow up here.

I stopped @ PO where my mail arrived just that AM. Next was a visit to Sun Summit South, Chip’s shop, to pick up my UPS packages. Susan, his wife is holding the door open during his Italian riding adventure. I missed visiting w/ him. I ordered the book I thought was stored @ Tom’s house: 30 Energy Efficient Homes. I paged quickly to the house design that is a possible build for me.

I was examined my an DO for my eye pain. My intention was to be seen by an Ophthalmologist but my request was botched by the front desk of the DR office. The DO examined my eyes discovering swelling of my eyes and issues w/ the mucus membrane. early stages of cataracts. He prescribed drops. I questioned his scope of medical treatment if I should be seen by an  ophthalmologist; he said he was in scope. Concern he has for source of head ache is optic nerve damage. i have a Monday appointment for an exam to check this out.

Friend Steve met me after my DR visit. Our ride plan was on the best possible riding trails for this time of the year. Unfortunately we were skunked by freeze thaw mud and snow. Cold got to us after the heat of the day peaked. Short muddy ride.

Steve invited me to dinner and spend the night @ his house. I volunteered my Waldorf salad that he has read about. he fixed a nice piece of Alaskan salmon. Mia, his wife is into horses. He is a horse vet. We watched Game one of the World Series. I slept in his drive way. Temp this AM was 23. I was toasty in my van.

Today I did my wash in Hailey then drove up river to Ketchum. First stop was the Elephants Perch. Another place to hang out and tell stories and visit w/ other friends. Kyle was working and so was rambler Roger. I( needed to leave to attend to writing and other visits.

My Dad is having serious medical issues such that I may make a detour to Ohio.

Off for more visits.

Chilly

Last night was almost too warm for the heater. Strong enough winds were blowing forcing open the sky light such that I could only crack it open. Not enough exhaust air escaped. I awoke around 3:30 all but sweating. Just b4 the CO alarm went off. I opened the door and turned on the fan on high to purge the air. Seemed to have worked and I went went back to sleep. I slept in a bit.

Cloudy skies wanting to dump. I checked the radar images which revealed nothing up wind. Clear weather and I go for a ride. Around 40 degrees. I added long finger summer gloves, knee warmers, and a wool long underwear top. Windy. I dropped into Dry Gulch where the wind didn’t hit me full on. I rode up canyon and exited on Snakeskin climbing out of canyon back into wind. I rode down Sugar Loaf which is some places was a rocky tread to finally brakeless flow thru the sage. As I rounded the last corner b4 my van I saw a car w/ a bike on top beside my van. A guy sees me and immediately asks me about my ticker. Huh? Have I met you somewhere and I forgot? How does he know about my ticker which he clarified as heart. Dave is his name and he reads my blog, we never met. 48 years old. At 42 he had a heart attack. He now rides to take care of himself. We chatted for a short while while outside. I shut off the heat b4 I left for my ride. I was so cold I needed to get warm. I turned on the heater. I was bone chilled.

The route I rode was described to me by Mike as his night ride. I wanted to ride it in day light in case I rode it w/ lights. After 1 lap I decided that I had ridden enough for the day.

Yellow color is quaking aspen growing along a source of water.

I drove into Twin for propane and a shower. 3.6 gallons of propane, 5.6 is full. I would have run out about breakfast time tomorrow. Or earlier. 40 degrees w/ bitter wind. Chilly. My shower quest turned up only Golds gym requiring $10 day pass. I chose to live in my unwashed skin.

I stopped @ Epic Bikes. Jack greeted me. Dave works here part time. We were the only 2 in the shop. We sat and chatted. The shop displayed several classic bicycles. The oldest was a 1882 high wheel bike. He said they were made from 1870 to 1890 and cost $101 back then and only wealthy people were able to afford one. However, riding it was a dangerous effort resulting in frequent crashes. he said that bikes were given up by  the owners because of injuries.

Back out @ TH for the night. A rider w/ a light rode past my van. Moon past 1/2 full. 32 degrees is chilly.

The clouds lifted a bit allowing me to see up towards Hailey. I saw white mountains. Snow. Tomorrow I drive up into it.
