What a 24 hours and its not over yet

Rousted by the cops, ran out of propane, frige quits working, hard rains & high winds, and its not over yet.

About 11:30 cop beats on side of van and hollers: Police, open up. I crawl out of bed & open the door to stare into a flashlight beam. He asks for my id and registration. I struggle to remove my license from its holder, that’s after I find the pocket it is in my pants. The last piece of paper from the glove box is the registration. There are 2 cops. One asks me what I’m doing and I say sleeping and ask if it is ok to be here. He says its ok but they are investigating unfamiliar vehicles as there have been burglaries in the neighborhood, I hear them laughing over my license plate. The 2nd cop talks this time and says that I am ok but I need to keep my doors locked as I might be  a victim. They leave, I crawl back under covers. OK, the worst that could happen tonight has and the rest was gravy.

The temp outside stayed warm with cloud cover. I ran the heater on low. I heard rain on the roof and smiled with satisfaction that I covered the bikes before going to bed. I awoke and saw on the frige panel a big F for frige off. I noticed a chill or at least absence of hot air. Deduced immediately that the propane tank was empty. Friday I pulled partially into Jim Thorpe XG w/ intent to buy propane. I chickened out. The frige is out. I push buttons attempting to turn frige over to DC battery power. I receive a failure error and push another button and the frige goes lights out.

OK I can deal with this.

Yogurt & slice of jellied bread and off back to XG for propane and phone book for frige repair. Great proprietor at XG. Tank only takes 5.7 gallons not the 7 gal capacity. Worrisome.

Check yellow pages for RV repair shops nearby. First one I call is Blue Mtn and is open and they will work on my frige today after originally saying next opening is 11/13.

Drive S of Broadsville to RV. Rob sees me right away and fixes. I blew the fuse. Again, I missed an important detail: I pulled the wrong fuse  missing the frige circuit that had blown. I replaced fuse and it blew again. Rob said that the install was wrong: I needed 1 heavier gauge wire and a 15 amp fuse circuit. He disconnected the DC equipment to prevent the frige being switched to it as it would blow the fuse and error out on the controls. Ended up w/ a 20 amp fuse which is the largest the wiring could withstand.

Ride at JT was rained out rightfully. Decided to drive to Bethlehem to ride Salisbury on Sun. Rain and high winds. High density of traffic on rt 33 & 22 near Bethlehem. drove to Action Cycles to inquire of local rides. Gave me Salisbury validating my search.

wandered out looking sort of for the TH. Found grocery store parking lot for internet work & croceries. rains and wind picked up. The roof fan leaks: hard rain and wind pushing it. Windows steamed up with all openings firmly shut.

Going to check out bar in parking lot for sports. Series in Philly has to be rained out as they aren’t far from here and no way is the weather better 60 miles away. OSU vs Penn State. Maybe sleep in parking lot.

At WInd Gap crossed the AT. Took several pics. AT doesn’t stay far from population.

Did laundry and hung clothes to dry in side. Sure, 100% humidity. I asked attendant where the hikers coming off the AT get a shower. She came up empty and I didn’t search further.

Leaves almost all down. See way into woods.

Tomorrow’s forecast is for sunny. Ride Salis and drive down to visit S & Barb.

Snookered again

Set watch alarm for 6:00 to be gone before 7:00. Heater worked well sleeping with just summer blanket while outside a heavy frost struck. Drove up to boat launch area of park while still dark. Paranoid that I would be rousted and charged with spending night there. Drove up road further & found Switchback railroad historical dirt parking area. Historically a recognized place but modern times treated it with a poor dirt parking lot and litter.

Fixed bfast & drug my feet waiting for fog to burn off and frost to melt. Found in Bikemag the ride Twin Peaks here in JT. Drove into town down Broadway that is vary narrow with cars parked on either side. Still cold downtown. Parked in public lot behind train depot. Quite historical based on coal. Site:jimthope.org.

Checked in @ bike shop and was given ride update info. Headed out. Ride turned out to be road, railroad grade, truck roads, 1 piece of wide ST for a mile. Bikemag said the ride was way more than that. What a bust. Still made a 20 mile day. Leaves mostly all down.

Back into town & bike shop. Checked out other shop and asked what their understanding of Twin Peaks ride was. Said same thing as much as a non rider could explain. Back to Blue mtn & told them of my disappointment. Said it was the same ride that they took the writer on.

Back to van and internet search. Found a ride on Sat here in JT lead by Lehigh Valley club. Signed up, ride description said technical advanced. PA rocks are smaller and cast in. Way easier to ride for what little I rode. Pump up tires and ride light. Look forward to a challenging ride.

Left knee still hurts, still keep riding. Forecast was calling for big rain tomorrow which would mean reat day. Found a local ride and the forecast is pushing the rain to later in day.

No shower, could have poached a XG shower but I didn’t want to freeze again.

Drove back up valley looking for a place to crash. Eventually found spot I rode thru: Back off the highway quite a ways. Should be quiet again. Last night was so quiet it was strange not hearing the heavy traffic.

Jersey down, on into PA

Chilly night. Found out heater has  lo, med, & high heat level settings. Spent heat comfortable night but traffic noise provide its own discomfort. Pancakes for Bfast. Grocery shop again at A & P.

Headed back to NY and back into Jersey to Wawayanda SP. Parked at boat launch and no bike riders. Nobody replied to my web posting. Beautiful day. Headed out with park supplied map. Wandered around.

Viewed old iron furnace that smelted iron back in mid 1800s. Resource extraction. Can’t live with environmental damage and can’t live with out what it produces.

Rock gardens coming on strong. Rode a few feet of some and walked a bunch of feet on others.

Ran into Rhodendron thickets that are almost inpenetratable like my first lost experience in PA 33 years ago:

need a cut path to get through
need a cut path to get through

Add another fall to the log: front wheel caught in a rut, stalled it and flung me down on my left side. Couple of bruises forth coming.

Back @ TH, just too beautiful to load up. Talked to a rider heading out.

Drove out of Jersey and over Delaware Water gap. Lots of traffic. Drove into Jim Thorpe for next bunch of rides. Town in tight valley. Pulled into parking lot just off Main. A couple with a double touring kayak on their car talked to me for several minutes, gave me their version of local news. Walked around building to go to bike shop on Main. Woman on street across from store greets me with ride info from shop and local news. She even open the shop and gave me a for sale guide book.

Drove up out of valley to XG. Pull in, office closed, started to drive away. Car pulls up, XG manager. Start visiting. Fee is $20. Said too much, asked where else park for free, he said Walmart. Just about to drive away and he says there are showers here but it would be cold getting out. He then said I have never seen you but if you camp here and leave before 7:00 you’re good. he then continued to visit with me. he was taken by my mountain biking the states and perceived me to be a different person. He is envious of me; he wants to adventure like this but can’t let go of his anchor. 68 years old, cancer survivor. Pulled into campsite poised for rapid get away.

Getting way chilly. Walked up to shower. Restroom no heated. Shower nozzle sent a diverse spray of about body heat temp. Required keeping constant pulling on a string to keep h2o on. Started shivering thinking I might go hypodermic in a shower. Back to van and turned on the heat.

Walked down to lake in twilight. Canadian geese were talking and small groups flew just above surface of h2o. Watched several geese pull some flying stunts.

Hunkered down inside van enjoying heat. No idea of temp outside but forecast tonight is 28 deg.

World series on XM. In PA should find some Phillies fans. Need to go to a bar one night and watch it.

Closing up early to go to bed.
