Rain…. sort of

Saturday AM after repeat of Wait Wait Don’t tell Me NPR news quiz show, dishes done and put away, drinking a second cup of coffee( rarity),listening to Outlaw Country (Tom, a fav of mine also), and vaping Charlotte’s web, a cannabis w/ high CBD to see if it lessens my shoulder pain. If pain diminishes my typing will improve. My shoulder flat out hurts.

Weather forecast for last several days called for rain today, Saturday. Threat or promise? So dry here in Bend. I created a schedule to support potential rain riding yesterday and making today a rest day. Before bed last night out here finally at my favorite spot sprinkles fell. I struggled to cover my bike one handed. Just a tease, a new sprinkles and the spigot was turned off. This morning while still dark sprinkles w/ more gusto fell for several minutes and quit. Sitting here in cloud cover, solar collector is finding enough sun to trip the charging icon.

I made an appointment at Discount tire for yesterday to buy and install a pair of new tires. No sales tax in Oregon. In and out quickly. I checked the mileage on the replaced tires comparing it to the guaranteed mileage of 70,000 miles which I didn’t get. They gave me mileage credit.

Discount is out @ far NW corner of Bend, on the way to Sisters. Made sense: I drove to Sisters to ride Sisters Trails aka Peterson ridge. New tires on rear and rear on front were being habituated to their new homes making for slightly spirited handling. The van ain’t a tame cat settling into the stud grooves, it’s always a handful.

Sun was still shining when I pulled into the parking lot. Clouds were moving in, first the mares tails indicating high level moisture then the running sheep that are the early stages of cumulus for rain. Boded well for rain. Trail system is a ladder format w/ connectors between the uprights, hence ladder. I continue to ride up the odd number side and take the highest rung connector over to the even side for the descent. On my way up I passed an older guy riding a hardtail in a rock garden. He walked it and I trialed my way over. I complimented him for being out riding. He responded negatively on my comment. I shouted it was encouragement. I approached a steep climb over an abandoned water canal. I waited for him. I repeated my compliment. He’s a new rider that he continued to belabor that fact. He then learned that I was helping him. He then asked me lots of questions about biking. I supplied him w/ lots of info taking time. I chilled off. Finally I broke off the conversation and pedaled away. He was very grateful for the info I shared w/ him. New riders become experienced riders w/ care.

Sisters has many rock gardens. Today I rode thru almost all of them. I avoided the tight pedal catchers. The downhill used a part of the same water canal by snaking from side to side snakes about 10′ span, bermed turns. Sandy in some corners, ride the outside berm and steer straight.

Back at the van I got off my bike. A woman made a beeline for me making full on eye contact. I think she is going to attach me for something I did or stood for. But it was the good side of the coin. Heather(?) was extremely jealous of what I was doing saying she is wanting to do the same when she retires. She wanted to change places w/ me. OK, I said, I put my hands on her shoulders and spun her to my place and I moved to where she stood. Good, she said, I am now a sex education teacher. I do provide an example.

A Canadian couple parked beside me returned from their ride. They asked about other rides in the area. I asked what their travel plans were to direct my answers to their needs. Oakridge was on their itinerary. I showed them my Oakridge map where I have red highlighted the rides I have done. Lots of red. They bid adieu and drove away.

Trailhead is in an urban forest zone. I pedaled 2 houses away from my van cooling off. I startled a doe who was bedded down in bark chips right against the front wall of a house. 6 wild turkeys squawked and paraded crossing the road several times.

I drove back to Bend. Friday night shower then down to 10 Barrel.

On Monday at my PT session Dave told me I have what I have and PT is unable to make things better. I don’t have arthritis but no muscles to control posterior movement of my shoulder. In essence, if I fall on my outstretched arm like in a lawn dart fall there is no muscle to stop my shoulder from going right out my back. Ow.

Tuesday I rode Tylers again having it all by myself. Ride it during the week in mid morning means few other riders. Tylers is a worn in machine built flow trail in places using old logging skidder roads mixed in w/ handbuilt. Drop the seat and let the bike move under me as I chose lines. I ride w/ a 2.4″ tire at 23psi and a 2.2″ 24psi on the rear. The idea w/ the smaller rear tire is that it spins up faster and seems to break loose to follow the direction change. Just know the rear is slightly squirrelly. Ride was 16.05 miles climbing 1742′.

Wednesday was a rest day. I had a cyst on the back of my neck that became painful before I arrived in Oakridge. I made an appointment for treatment Wednesday being the earliest back in Bend. Heidi, the medical professional, attacked the bulging cyst. Numbed me up locally then started cutting, squeezing, and blotting up blood. She scraped the edge of the cyst which becomes very fibrous, I could sense the scapula scraping. She packed the opening to aid in draining. The cyst might return and if so will require real surgery to remove.

Later Austin worked my body over during a massage. My back is loosened as are other parts. Real value in therapeutic massage.

A medical marijuana dispensary opened several buildings away from 10 Barrel. Oregon law allows dispensaries to sell pot to the public until their planned sales outlets open. No tax. Cost is same as street price. I visited to buy supplies. Crazy. It’s like a wine bar with a sommelier telling the virtues of each selection. There’s Indica, hybrids, and Sativa. I chose a hybrid that adds both an indacouch feeling of Indica w/ the get up and go of the Sativa. Bought an eighth. Yesterday I stopped to buy the pain med which does change my shoulder pain and still packs a buzz.

Thursday I rode from Phils climbing Bens then picking up illegal Pine Drop climbing to high point of junction w/ Phils and Storm King. descent down Storm King is a blast w/ some bermed turns that I carved around. Lots of good stuff. Mix in some tight twisty rocky pieces and it is first rate. 20.38 miles climbing 1796′, took 2 hrs 44 mins of pedaling.

Thursday night was a COTA movie night in a funky theater downtown. Mountain bike porn movies capturing riders doing to me insane rides w/ big jumps, big air, fast speed. Not my riding or ability. Gravity provides the engine. I left before the second film was finished. I had enough. I drove out to my spot and for the second time it was occupied by the same pickup. I drove to another spot. Fall season dries up the summer crowd who might be competing w/ me seeking primitive camping spots.

The design company sent me their proposal of services. Fee is $4,000 for design to submitting plans for permit. They will work on it over the winter. Idea is small maybe 20’X20′ house.

I still plan on leaving here heading to Sun Valley, a one day drive, w/ no published mountain biking rides between here and there. From there I am planning on Wyoming riding where snow hasn’t fallen.

Cloudy skies looking like rain but not dropping. College football watching.

Furnace has been working like a comfortable charm.

Darkthirty

Sundown per Suunto is 6:09PM. Alpinglow lasts for a short while then lights out. Back in Bend camped at my favorite spot. Friday night someone else had it causing me to look elsewhere. Crowded night.

Friday I left Oakridge after breakfast heading back to Bend. First was a loop ride of Waldo Lake, up on the Cascade Crest, west of Willametee Pass and north of highway 58. Sits at 5400′, Oregon’s second largest lake, completely land locked: no innee, no outee.

I started my ride from Shadow Bay getting right on the trail. Beautiful clear blue skies but chilly. I rode clockwise as a pick. As the ride moved on I realized the benefit of being on the west side of the lake w/ the sun behind me. The west side is more technical but less up and down. What a beautiful day w/ fall colors abounding. Most spectacular were the red huckleberry leaves.

I stopped many times on the west side to take pics.

Big lake:

The east side had more ups and downs and away from the lake. Pedal up then drop down the back side to climb up the next upslope. I have been riding more often in the 22 tooth chain ring and the 36 on the back climbing. I am learning to spin it. Ride was 20.32 miles climbing 1720′

So, Waldo was just drop dead beautiful. I bid adieu and continued to Bend.

Shower at Snap and beer and dinner at 10 Barrels. Drove out to camp spot about 8, someone else got my spot. The other go to spot had someone there. I elected to drive over to where Marvins crosses another road. 2 other cars joined later.

Sat was Bikeoctober COTA trail work day. Met @ REI. I joined a group to work on a secret stash on a major trail. I worked on the legal trail clearing water transported materials w/ a Macloud. I found that I could make my shoulder tolerate the work. I was a hiker, per Trail Love bikers yield to hikers. I stepped off the trail. Hardly a rider voiced thanks for performing trail work. Women were the worse etiquette violators. Worked a bunch of hours then drove back to REI for beer and food. I spoke w/ several COTA people about the Brain for a Beer idea.

Shower at Snap, a beer at 10 Barrels then deli shopping at Newport market. I started driving out to Phils spot while I thought about today’s ride which was going to be from like Swampy which is on the way to Bachelor. I chose to drive up that way. I found a spot off road 4613 near where Funner crosses a spur road which is near where I worked on the trail earlier. Sprinkles then rain fell on my windshield as I drove up mtn. Finally full on wipers. I found my spot. Earlier during daylight wind velocity picked up. At my camp spot wind speed jumped. Rocked the van. No more rain. Set the furnace temp to turn on at some chilly temp.

Today at 8:00 when I looked out a window the sky was bright blue and no wind. I made French toast from craft baked whole seed bread. Filling. Unfortunately my body doesn’t do well w/ load of food starting the digestive process.

My ride today was from Swampy Lake going down south fork to intersect w/ Tumalo Creek trail ( the intersection is outside the closure area) going downstream to junction w/ climb out to Swede ridge shelter. Then Swede ridge back to Swampy shelter. The ride started flat then dropped down mountain then climbed back out to an up and down ridge. One characteristic of a great ride is if the finish is downhill. I do like gravity being my engine. I was not wind chilled going downhill as I had not broken a sweat. Sunlight made the forest floor thru the gaps in tree cover. There were puddles in places and no dust. Saw only a hiking couple. Some Bend is not flat: ride was 15.18 miles climbing 1923′.

Drove back into town for shower, a beer at 10 Barrels, and grocery shop then drove out to Phils spot while still light. Got my spot. Fixed dinner and cleaned up. Chilly. This AM it was 34 degrees. Furnace is delightful as it is running now.

Next Sunday COTA is presenting a trail work technique session that I plan on attending. I am thinking I should be leaving that next Monday. I will head east most likely visiting Sun Valley. I have been researching Wyoming rides where I have never been. Race against snow.

IMBA and BLM are showing the results of partnership in the form of noted rides. I have ridden most of them and will add the others to my to ride list. One is in Lander, WY.

Tomorrow is a PT session and fork service next door. Rest day.

Hardesty and Alpine

I made 3 goals to accomplish while in Oakridge and I have completed them. 1) ride ATCA, 2)Ride Heckletooth w/ Jim, and 3)ride big Hardesty loop. I made them all.

I rested on Tuesday putzing around. I bought groceries for Captain Jack chicken and drove up FS road 2409 towards Dead Mountain where a small rock quarry sculpted out a flat spot w/ a view location. Jim and Bob pedaled up on Wed on their Dead mtn ride.

Wednesday was Goodman Hardesty loop, a real big one and way out there. I rode it 2 times previously so I recalled the route. I knew that it would be really hard and somewhat scary as I would be way the fuck back out there by myself. I parked @ the Hardesty Mtn TH right off rt 58. I noticed broken window glass on the pavement. It is what it was. Goodman creek trail is a climb, the easiest of the ride.

Trail topped out on paved old logging road which wound around to the start of Sawtooth trail that climbed even further into a different tree cover

on Saw tooth ridge

There are big trees here also, this is one spot where i stopped to catch my lost breath. Climb, climb, hike a bike, pause, pedal some.

Sawtooth was torture w/ several steep hike a bike pieces broken by downhills. Shit to climb up then drop down the back side knowing that more elevation was still ahead. I intersected w/Hardesty and the real fun started in the tech downhill on old legacy hiking trail. According to a FS person (Kevin) the trail predates the FS in 1910. Drop drop, drop, drop…  that’s the idea. Ultimately the trail returns to the TH and an unmolested van.

I saw a hiker early on and another hiker just about the bottom. Out there by myself. I use a Garmin edge 800 and used backcountry navigator app on my phone. 2 different results. Garmin: 14.71 miles, BC: 18.5;Garmin 2hrs 17 mins, BC 3 hrs 15; Garmin 4158′ climb, BC 3905. I made it w/o incident and felt relief being finished.

In the parking lot was a young woman who just finished her ride. She initiated a conversation by asking for riding tips as she just started riding. I gave her pieces of Better Ride skills. She willingly paid attention.

I drove back to the Pub for a beer and pub food. I was pretty high from my accomplishment. Derrick and I conversed at the bar. We bid adieu. He said that I am part of the culture here. I’m a made man. I talked about riding Alpine today via the shuttle. He said I should do it just to ride it because.

Out to Salmon creek for the night. I haven’t has night time leg cramps for a long time. I lay down in bed and felt relaxation. I listened to my body to determine today’s ride. Woke up and body had passed the test.

The shuttle leaves at 9:45. Maybe 12 riders climbed on board. Shuttle drives up to Kate’s cutin then you ride back down to Red Bridge in Westfir where your car is. I rode it fast as I could pedal uphill and comfortable at speed downhill. Garmin said 12.38 miles in 1 hr 32 mins climbing 1149 and dropping an astounding 4470′. Deep forest cover, only 1 place does the trail break out in the open in a meadow hung on the side of the mountain. Down low a black bear ran across the trail heading down mountain side at a brush breaking pace. Bear story for the year.

Back in town I stopped at Oregon Adventures, Randy’s shuttle service, hoping to catch someone there so I could get inside to take a shower. randy showed up and let me in. I am clean and in clean clothes. Next was the laundromat. I rode 6 out of 7 days sweating up all my riding shorts. My clothes line is jammed full. Laundromat is in a side room of St Vinny.

Plug for Randy: Oregon Adventures: oregon-adventures.com for Oakridge area shuttles. I have earned comp status.

I’ll hang here for tonight then tomorrow head back to Bend stopping to ride Waldo Lake. COTA is sponsoring their Bikeoctober trail work day that I will help the Bend trails.

The Garmin drops data gathering when my speed drops to 1.5 mph whether I am pedaling or pushing. Cum Garmin data states I have climbed 1,967,063′. That’s almost two million feet. and ridden 24,303 miles.

I like central Oregon and Oakridge. Oakridge is a favorite riding destination. Bring your climbing legs. Les, these rides are steeper and longer than trail 257. Saddle up your camp and head down here for days of punishing rides.

just wanted to
just wanted to, 30.5 wide bar and short stem.

The sintered brake pads are quiet and very powerful gripping the 8″ rotor w/ gusto. Here I have been riding granny a lot. 34 chain ring 36 cluster and wonder what even lower gears might feel like. With my 2X10 I have lower gears than a 1X10.

Trails here are narrow bench cut many old legacy hiking trails. Steep steep out slope. A mistake causing a  launching off side of hill you won’t stop for awhile and nobody will know that’s where you went.
